My name is Warren Williams and I guess you could say I’m one of those “Jack Of All Trades”. I am known by my friends and colleagues for the diversity of the things I do and the many hats I wear.

First and foremost I’m a family man, a husband to my amazing wife Tracy, and a father to my two adult children Larissa and Jordan. I’m a School Teacher of more than three decades, currently Head of House in a Catholic Boys College in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. I’m a professional Entertainer/Singer in a successful Vocal Group with my younger brothers. I’m a Public Speaker and Motivational Presenter, an Artist and Painter.  But most importantly to me, I AM A RUNNER!

Running has given me some of the most memorable and special moments of my life. It helps me to manage the daily pressure of the busy life I live and most recently it has become the latest in my work and career ventures.

In 2016 I became an Accredited Level 2 Advanced Coach with Athletics Australia through the ANSW Coaching Program. That year I took the role Head Coach at “SWEAT Sydney” (Centennial Park’s longest established and biggest Running Squad) when its founder and coaching Guru Sean Williams moved to Melbourne to start his Melbourne Pack Squad.  I also supported and mentored my son Jordan in the formation of what is fast becoming one of Sydney’s most successful Junior Running and Triathlon Squads “Up And Running” (www.upandrunning.sydney). My coaching duties have further expanded this year with the position of Athletics Coordinator at Kincoppal School Rose Bay, and Beach Events Coach for Bronte Nippers.

My love of running came when I met the man who was to become my father-in-law at the age of 17. Until that time the only sports I was ever interested in were Surfing and Rugby League. Bob Lewis was quite possibly the fittest man I have ever met. He bought me my first pair of running shoes and got me out on the road with him. His influence instantly changed my life and infused a love of running and being super fit. He went on to buy me my first racing bike and introduced me to Triathlon way back in the early 80’s in the developing years of the sport. I was hooked and through the years completed countless fun runs and triathlons with numerous Age Group wins and podium finishes.

For the past 40 years training and in particular running has become a major part of who I am and what defines me. I have pushed my body to the wall over the years sometimes with outcomes that weren’t necessarily for the good in pursuit of that next race medal or podium finish.

In 2010 at the age of 49 and an elite Masters Runner I was struck down with a cardiac arrhythmia. I was super fit at the time, running around 35 minutes for 10km. The condition found in a random check-up was of total shock to myself and my doctor. One day I was banging out a session with the Sweat Sydney Elite Squad and the next I was in Intensive Care in a Cardiac Unit. I had no symptoms or indication that I was unwell.

The Cardiologist who was assigned to care for me explained that my condition was most likely the result of years of training and racing in endurance events. For the next 3 months I was treated with unsuccessful drug therapy. I was unable to run and struggled to go to work. It was a very quick and seemingly uncontrollable downward spiral. A change in Cardiologists in June of that year led to me being implanted with a cardiac pacemaker, and instantly my life took a turn for the better. I was back running within two weeks, training again with the squad within a month and soon after racing. Since that time I have made a comeback to running with several Age Group Podium finishes on the road and on track.

My condition in many ways has brought positive change to my life and opportunities that I would never have experienced.

In 2013 I was selected by US Medical Company Medtronic to run in their “Global Heroes Team” (an International Team of 20 Runners from around the world supported by implanted medical devices) in New York, Minneapolis and St. Paul USA. In 2014 and again in 2015 I was invited back as Team Captain and in 2016 as an Athlete’s Support. I have spoken at conferences in the US, Singapore and across Australia for Medtronic.

My most moving and memorable running moment/s was racing in the 2014 and 2015 “Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower” in NYC. The race follows the footsteps of the courageous fire fighter who ran from his fire station in Redhook Brooklyn under the Hudson River through the Battery Tunnel to Ground Zero where he perished in the Southern Tower on September 11. It is a must do race if ever you are in the US in September.

In 2017 I became an Ambassador for the National Heart Foundation and their City 2 Surf Team Captain. I will Captain “Team Heart Foundation” again in 2018 on the road to Bondi Beach.

I have not let my condition slow me down. As you can see above my life is very busy with a 7 day per week work and training schedule. These days though I get greater pleasure watching the kids and adults I coach achieving their goals and improving what they do.

Running is what keeps me going and I will never stop. My moto is “Only consider the positives as the negatives will only slow you down”.
