People from Armidale and around the New England have the opportunity to join in a professional community fun run following today’s launch of the Greater Armidale Fun Run.
The fun run will be held at Harris Park, home of the Armidale Athletics Club, on Sunday November 1.
Run NSW recreational running manager and event organiser Scott Westcott said there are three different runs – a 10 km run, 5km run and a 2km children’s run – so there is an event for everyone in the community.
Mr Westcott said the event was able to continue for a third year thanks to new sponsors Greater Building Society and Armidale Sportspower joining inaugural sponsor Roberts & Morrow. Sport UNE will again provide significant event support as will Armidale Athletics Club members and volunteers. He said Dumaresq Council, and its sporting arm, Armidale Sports Council also provided tremendous support.
“Thanks to our great supporters and the New England community the Greater Armidale Fun Run continues to develop as one of Run NSW’s marquee regional events,†Mr Westcott said.
At today’s launch, last year’s winner of the 5km run, Natasha Favotto, was the first person to enter the 2015 event. The Armidale Athletics Club member has recently represented NSW at the Australian Schools Cross Country in Melbourne.
Armidale Athletics Club president and Athletics NSW Administrator of the Year (2015), Jay Stone, said the Club was growing and more people were enjoying running including through the local Park Run.
“The Greater Armidale Fun Run is a key contributor to the resurgence of recreational running locally.
Greater Building Society Armidale branch manager Wendy Ng said The Greater is supporting ten Athletics NSW RunNSW community fun runs across NSW in 2015. She and her Armidale colleagues are entering a team and encouraged other businesses to do the same.
“The Greater is helping the local community to come together and have fun and be fit and hopefully we will also attract some visitors to our town for the run too,†Ms Ng said.
Early bird entries are $10 for kids and $20 for adults and all early birds receive a free t-shirt valued at $20. Every participant will receive a finisher’s certificate and there will be medals for the major age categories in each of the three runs.
