Hunter people of all ages will have the opportunity to get active, have fun and support research into brain cancer this Father’s day at the Greater Raymond Terrace Fun Run.
Entries were declared open at a launch held in Raymond Terrace on Thursday July 30. The Fun Run will feature eight and four kilometre events and a two kilometre event for kids.
Athletics NSW CEO Greg Meagher said the Fun Run is being held for a second year thanks to a new major sponsor, Greater Building Society, and partnerships with Port Stephens Council and the Raymond Terrace Athletics Club.
Event organiser and Australian marathon runner Scott Westcott said last year’s event attracted more than 300 entrants and he’s confident this year’s event will be bigger and better. Mr Westcott said there was interest building amongst schools, commercial gyms and the local ’parkrun’ running community. He thanked Port Stephens Council for making a fantastic run course possible that showcases Raymond Terrace. The run will start adjacent to Vi Barnett Field and follow the Hunter River south along King, William and Hunter Streets before turning left onto Swan St and running out to a turnaround point.
Council’s Tourism and Events Coordinator, Kim Latham, said the run brings visitors and local community members into the heart of Raymond Terrace to bring an economic boost to the town.
Raymond Terrace Athletics Club is giving the event a broader community appeal. Chairperson David Holland said the club had organised stall holders and kids’ amusements to make it a great morning out on Fathers Day for the whole community, whether people are running or not. Mr Holland said the event will also raise funds for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
“One of our young members is battling to overcome brain cancer so this is an issue close to our hearts and that of others in the community,†Mr Holland said.
Greater Building Society Raymond Terrace Branch Manager Damien Hepworth said the event is one of nine Athletics NSW RunNSW community fun runs it is supporting across NSW in 2015. The other Hunter event is the Fernleigh 15 to be held in October.
“I encourage people from across the Hunter to join The Greater in supporting this event and a great cause.†Mr Hepworth said.
The first registered runners are three of last year’s winners: the 8km event winner and national level athlete from Newcastle Guy Walters; 2km boys event winner and member of the Raymond Terrace Athletic Club, Jai Holland; and 2km girls event winner and Lake Macquarie runner, Kaitlyn Klien. Early bird entries are $10 for kids and $20 for adults. Every participant will receive a finisher’s certificate and there will be medals major age categories in each of the three runs.
