Four Parkeslocals are preparing to run from Parkes to Parramatta for muscular dystrophy.

Hamish, Orr, Lucas White, Sarah Melhiush and Matt Melhiush are running more than 350 kilometres for their friend, cousin and brother Michael Melhuish, and to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy NSW.

Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular genetic disorder which results in the progressive deterioration of muscle strength and function. 25-year-old Michael was diagnosed with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, the most common childhood form, at age three, and is now completely dependent on an electric wheelchair for his quality of life.

The runners will leave from Lion’s Park, Parkes on Saturday, June 20.

The group plans to run for about 6-8 hours per day, taking in Manildra, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Blackheath, Springwood and Rooty Hill, finally reaching Parramatta Stadium in time for Michael to watch his favourite team, the Parramatta Eels, play the St George Illawarra Dragons on Saturday, June 27.

To further promote the run Hamish and Michael will be participating in the Northparkes Rotary Fun Run on May 17. Community members are encouraged to run with them.
