With cooler conditions forecast on Sunday the action in the 2nd Roberts & Morrow Armidale Fun Run is set to be fast and furious! The course remains largely unchanged for the expected 500 runners who will take on the Roberts & Morrow 10km, Sport UNE 5k Gerard Kelly Solicitor 2k for kids.
“it’s a great result in the second year of what we hope will become an annual event” said Scott Westcott of Athletics NSW. “The R&M Armidale Fun Run is the jewel in our RunNSW fun run series and we believe it can become one of the best fun runs in regional NSW” he continued.
The 5km event has attracted the most competitors with almost 300 runners set to take part. Perhaps part of the popularity of the 5km event is the due recent establishment of Armidale parkrun. Parkrun Run Direct Dale Murray said “we started parkrun in July and have had 15 runs since then. The best thing about parkrun is that it has been a partnership from day one between Armidale Athletics Club, Sport UNE and myself. Our aim is to create a healthy active community and the fun run is an extension of that.”
Dale Murray also confirmed that there have been over 600 unique participants at Armidale parkrun in the 4 months since it’s inception. Many of these participants will toe the line on Sunday morning with parkrun having a break this weekend.
At the pointy end of the racing it would appear that the 5km is attracting the faster runners. Local juniors Hugh Knox and Stuart Geddes will be challenging for line honours while junior girl Natasha Fovatto could well be the first female home.
Entries can still be made on the day at Harris Park from 6:30am.
