Athletics NSW is pleased to announce that Lake Macquarie City Council has embraced the opportunity to become the naming rights partner of the Fernleigh15 for the next three years.
Mr Greg Meagher, Athletics NSW CEO said: “Athletics NSW is delighted to welcome Lake Macquarie City Council to the Fernleigh15 Team and looks forward to working with Lake Macquarie to further develop this great community event.
“Athletics NSW is committed to hosting successful, well-supported events in regional NSW which enable recreational runners and walkers to compete with elite runners and wheelchair athletes. The Fernleigh15 was our first regional community fun run staged and we couldn’t be happier with the exponential growth of the event and the support shown by the local community.”
Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Jodie Harrison, said the Fernleigh Track is one of the region’s most popular shared pathways and it is exciting for Council to have the opportunity to support a great community event at this facility.
“The Fernleigh 15 is a wonderful event that encourages the local community to be active, while taking advantage of the beautiful scenery our area has to offer,” Cr Harrison said.
First held in 2012, the Fernleigh15 has quickly become a very popular ’must do’ event fun for elite and recreational runners, as well as wheelchair athletes and walkers.
Staged by Athletics NSW with support from H-events, the 2014 Lake Macquarie Fernleigh15 will take place on Saturday 19 October on the iconic Fernleigh Track, starting at Adamstown and finishing at the old Belmont Station. While the event is on, the track is closed to all other traffic including cyclists and pedestrians.
More than 1,500 participants from all over NSW are expected to be at the start line.
Catering for a variety of ages and abilities, participants can enter one of five categories: Open (14-34yrs), 35-44yrs, 45-54yrs, Wheelies, 55+ Masters and Walkers. There is also a team event. Teams of any size can be formed with the top 8 finishers, receiving points. (Once participants have registered as an individual, there is no added cost to create or join a team.)
This year’s event will again incorporate the Athletics NSW 15km Road Championships and some of Australia’s biggest names in distance running and wheelchair road racing are expected to take part, including Multi-World and Paralympian Champion and two-time Fernleigh 15 winner -Kurt Fearnley; as well as Commonwealth and Olympic Games and World Cross Country Championships representatives.
The 15km course has been accurately measured and features water stops, first aid stations and accurate timing.
