Athletics NSW is proud to announce the inaugural 2014 Raymond Terrace Fun Run to be held on Sunday 14 September. The run will feature 8km and 4km events along with a 2km for kids aged 12 years and under. The Fun Run is a partnership between Athletics NSW and Port Stephens Council with strong support from Raymond Terrace Athletics Club.
“The Raymond Terrace Fun Run will become part of our newly formed series of community fun runs being staged throughout NSW†said Athletics NSW CEO Greg Meagher. “The Series is being labelled as Run NSW and invites runners of all abilities to come and try our sport. We are particularly grateful to Port Stephens Council for their support and to the Raymond Terrace Athletics Club for getting right behind the conceptâ€.
The event is the result of months of planning and will be a spectacular outdoor community event for Raymond Terrace. The run will start alongside the Hunter River adjacent to Vi Barnett Field and follow the river south along King, William and Hunter Streets before turning left onto Swan St and running out to a turnaround point.
“The route is fantastic†said event organiser and Australian Marathon Representative Scott Westcott “It is one of the most idyllic settings for a run with the historic buildings along King St, the tree lined Hunter and Swan streets and the backdrop of the mighty Hunter River. I am particularly thankful to Port Stephens Council for making the run course possible which shows off some of the most outstanding parts of Raymond Terrace.â€
Port Stephens Council’s Tourism and Events Coordinator, Kim Latham has worked closely with Athletics NSW in the planning of the fun run from the beginning which involved narrowing down the list of possible run routes to both showcase Raymond Terrace and provide an exciting community event.
“It is important that the run provides a chance for visitors to come into the heart of Raymond Terrace and also gives the community a chance to get involved. I’m very glad that Raymond Terrace Athletics Club are helping to deliver the run and I believe there is interest building amongst schools, commercial gyms and our local ’parkrun’ running community,†said Kim.
Raymond Terrace Athletics Club is set to assist in the planning and delivery of the run and will add to a busy start to their formal athletics season. “We are very pleased as both a Little Athletics and Senior Athletics Club that this event will cater for all abilities and ages. We also welcome the use of our home ground Vi Barnett Field as the finishing point, which will be similar to finishing the Olympic marathon with the final 300m on the grass track!†said Deidre Hall of Raymond Terrace Athletics Club.
A training program is available on the website and entries are now open.
