Spring is upon us and so too is the return of the legendary Goulburn Fun Run. Momentum is gaining for this year’s event which will be held on Sunday the 5th October. Once again, it is being hosted by the Goulburn Runners and Walkers with the backing of Goulburn Senior Athletics and Athletics NSW. The Goulburn Fun Run started back in the 70’s and despite a few course changes over the years was just as tough a run back then, as it is today. There’s simply no escaping Goulburn’s iconic and foreboding landmark, Rocky Hill, with the exception of a few years when the run took place around Run-O-Waters. The Rocky Hill Fun Run, as it became known, was reputed amongst the running community as a run that would test the resolve of some of the country’s best athletes, placing the competitor’s into a world of hurt.
Andrew Lloyd, who is best known for coming from behind in the last lap to take the 5000m gold medal in the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games held the race record during the Lilac Rocky Hill Fun Run days, in the 80’s. More recently London Olympian, Martin Dent holds the race record for this new course after dominating the field in last year’s event. This year might not be so easy for Dent with interest from the 4th placegetter in the 2006 Commonwealth Games marathon, Scott Westcott, amongst others rumored to be entering this year’s event. In addition, a confirmed entrant is the storied winner of the 1998 Fun Run, Brad Storrier. I am told he has one ambition for this run, so will be one to watch!
The pressure is on for the locals entering this year’s 10km event. Up for grabs this year, is the inaugural “Peter Oberg” memorial trophy, going to the first local to cross the finish line. Many of the local running fraternity have expressed an aching desire to get their hands on this prize, in honour of Peter, including his brother Andrew!
For those that wish to avoid the agony associated with the 252 steps to the summit of Rocky Hill, there are two alternate runs on offer. A fast and flat 5km event, suitable for walkers and prams will make up the days schedule and is sure to attract some speedsters. There is also a 2kmRun4kids event following the same route starting from Carr Confoy Oval and meandering along the Mulwaree River cycle path. All competitors in the 2km event will get finishers medallion.
Earlybird entries close on 19th of September and online entries close at midnight on 2nd October, so get in and enter now for this fantastic excuse to get out and about in Goulburn. Entries are available online from the registration page, . Check us out on Facebook at Goulburn Fun Run. On the website, you can even watch a complete video walkthrough of the course, which for the first time, enters and completes a loop of the picturesque Goulburn Wetlands. Course maps and full descriptions are also on the website.
For those that wish to familiarise themselves with the course, the Goulburn Runners and Walkers are meeting at Carr Confoy Oval at 2:30pm this Sunday to run/walk the course, all are most welcome to attend, runners and walkers alike.
This fun run would not take place without the generosity of our sponsors, The Goulburn Workers Club, Sportspower Goulburn and Debbie Bassingthwaighte, for that, we thank you!
